Upbeat Acoustic Strolling Bands on the French Riviera

Updated: Jul 23

There is a particular kind of magic to a strolling band. No stage, no cables, no barrier between the music and the moment. Just a group of brilliant musicians wandering among your guests, guitars and voices carrying across a terrace at golden hour. The French Riviera is home to some of the world's finest upbeat acoustic strolling bands, and they are one of the easiest ways to lift the mood of an event from the very first drink.

You can navigate between different videos using the menu on the top left corner of the video.

Every event is different, but here is a running order we return to again and again because it simply works:

  1. A 45-minute background set during the drinks reception, warm and upbeat, setting the tone as guests arrive and mingle.

  2. A 30-minute interactive singalong between courses, gently stepping up the mood and drawing everyone into the evening.

  3. A 30-minute party set after dinner, full of energy to get the room going before the DJ takes over inside.

Why They Work So Well Here

The great practical advantage is that a strolling band needs no sound system at all. That makes them perfect for the many beautiful Riviera venues with strict limits on amplified sound, from clifftop hotels to historic châteaux, where a full band simply would not be allowed. They move with your guests rather than anchoring them to a stage, so the music follows the celebration from the gardens to the terrace to the dance floor. And because it is all acoustic, it never overpowers conversation, it lifts it.

Our Favourite Bands

Over the years we have built real relationships with a handful of bands we trust completely. These are the ones we come back to again and again. The Phly Boyz are Riviera royalty in our book. Based in Nice, they started out as street performers and have grown into an international act that has played more than thirty countries, but they have never lost that busker's instinct for winning over a crowd from scratch. Four male voices, entirely acoustic, no microphones or speakers, and a songbook that leaps from the 1920s to the current charts in a handful of languages. They can turn a quiet drinks reception into a singalong without anyone quite noticing how it happened.

The Troubadours are the ones we reach for when a party needs an effortless, feelgood pulse. A trio of English, Mexican and Brazilian musicians all living on the coast, they play acoustic and electric guitar, double bass and a miniature customised drum kit that they can carry anywhere, so they need no stage, no PA and no lights at all. Their harmony-driven set roams from The Beach Boys and Stevie Wonder to Pharrell, and it is the kind of sound that gets even the reluctant guests tapping their feet.

The Beau Ties are our secret weapon for the Riviera's strict no-amplification venues. A collective of English, Scottish and French musicians based here on the coast, their trick is that all four of them sing, giving them the full, layered four-part harmonies you almost never hear from an acoustic group. With no PA at all, they still fill a terrace with a genuinely rich sound. Their repertoire roams across jazz, Latin, pop, rock and soul, and they are fixtures at some of the most stylish spots in the south of France, from Club 55 to Anjuna Plage and La Petite Maison, so they arrive already fluent in the tempo of a Riviera party.

We also work with the Riviera Princes, who bring a distinctly Mediterranean flavour, weaving together sounds from across the different countries of the Med. It is a warmer, more evocative palette that suits a long lunch in the gardens or a golden-hour reception by the sea, the kind of set that has guests half-expecting to be somewhere between Nice, Naples and the Greek islands all at once. The style travels well beyond the Riviera, too.

The London-based Juke Joints, in the video above, capture the mood of an upbeat acoustic set perfectly, if you want a sense of what this kind of entertainment feels like in full flow.
